Liability

Any debt or financial obligation you owe.

A liability is money you owe — a mortgage, car loan, student loan, or credit-card balance. Liabilities are the opposite of assets, and subtracting them from your assets gives your net worth. Not all liabilities are equal: low-interest debt tied to an appreciating asset is very different from high-interest consumer debt.
