Principal

The amount you originally borrowed (or invested), before interest.

Principal is the original sum of money — the amount you borrowed on a loan, or the amount you first deposited or invested. Interest is calculated on the principal (and, with compounding, on accumulated interest too). On a loan, reducing the principal is the goal: every extra dollar of principal you pay off is a dollar that stops accruing interest.
