Simple Interest
Interest charged only on the original principal, never on itself.
Simple interest is calculated only on the original principal, not on any accumulated interest. Put $10,000 at 5% simple interest and you earn $500 every year, forever — the base never grows. It is straightforward but far less powerful than compound interest for savers, and less costly than compounding for borrowers. Most real-world loans and savings actually use compounding.
