Minimum Payment

The smallest amount you can pay on a debt to stay current.

The minimum payment is the least you can pay on a credit card each month without penalty — often around 1% of the balance plus interest. Because it is largely just interest, paying only the minimum stretches repayment out for years and can cost more in interest than the original balance. Paying a fixed amount above the minimum dramatically shortens the payoff.
