Emergency Fund

Cash set aside for unexpected expenses, kept safe and liquid.

An emergency fund is money reserved for life's surprises — a job loss, medical bill, or car repair — so that a setback does not become debt. The classic target is three to six months of essential expenses, kept somewhere safe and liquid like a high-yield savings account. A smaller starter fund of about $1,000 is a sensible first milestone.
