Dividend

A share of a company's profits paid to shareholders.

A dividend is a payment a company makes to its shareholders out of its profits, usually quarterly. Not all companies pay them — many growth companies reinvest instead. Reinvesting dividends rather than spending them is a powerful way to harness compounding, since each payment buys more shares that themselves pay dividends.
