Capital Gains

The profit from selling an investment for more than you paid.

Capital gains are the profit you make when you sell an asset — stocks, a home, or other property — for more than you paid for it. Gains on assets held longer are often taxed at lower "long-term" rates than short-term gains. Because tax treatment varies widely, our calculators show pre-tax results; factor in your own situation before making decisions.
